Copy-editing, Substantive Editing & Proofreading

Whether you are a native English speaker or not, if you require an abstract, an essay, a journal manuscript, dissertation or thesis to be proofread, copy-edited, or even substantively edited, I can apply my knowledge and experience to your written work, ensuring its onward journey to publication has the best chance of success.

Copy-editing takes the author’s text, ensures that it is written in good English, and makes it accurate and error-free, consistent, well structured, easy to follow, and suitable for its intended purpose. Substantive Editing would go further, covering structure and flow, presentation, formatting according to a target journal style, word-count reduction if desired, and detailed feedback. Proofreading is the last stage before a previously copy-edited work is published. The proofreader uses their skill and judgement to check the work of an author, marking amendments and providing feedback. Along with English language checking, the proofreader will also examine: consistency in style (including spelling and hyphenation); page numbers, page headings, section headings; table of contents; cross-references; illustrations and captions; tables and headings; and the logical arrangement of content. [Indexing and obtaining permission(s) are separate processes.]
